Linux/Unix & Infrastructure

Under every database and every cluster there is an operating system, and that is where stability and speed are decided. We administer Red Hat Enterprise Linux from version 3 to 10, SLES and Debian as well as the classic Unix systems Solaris, HP-UX and AIX that still keep many data centers running.

Typical tasks

  • Operations, patch management and security patching of RHEL, CentOS, SLES and Debian
  • Platform migrations and upgrades: CentOS to RHEL, RHEL 7 to 8, Solaris to RHEL, P2V migrations
  • Performance analysis and tuning at the operating system level, together with database tuning
  • High availability with HAProxy and Keepalived, GlusterFS, Samba with CTDB, MariaDB Galera
  • Load balancers, reverse proxies, DNS and LDAP, application servers such as Tomcat, JBoss and WebLogic
  • Package building with RPM, licensing via RHSM and virt-who, automation with Ansible

From practice

On behalf of HP Enterprise Services, HPE and DXC Technology, Vodafone’s outsourcing providers, we shared responsibility for operating Vodafone’s development data center in Düsseldorf from 11/2013 to 09/2017: Linux, Solaris, HP-UX, AIX, DNS, Apache and Oracle LDAP. This included two DNS domain migrations of the entire data center, several Oracle RAC databases, platform migrations from Solaris to RHEL and the setup of Oracle T7 hardware with Solaris 11.

Frequently asked questions

Do you also support old Unix systems?
Yes. We have run Solaris, HP-UX and AIX in data centers for years, including Solaris upgrades, LDOMs and zones. And we help with the move to RHEL when it is due.
Which Linux distributions?
Red Hat Enterprise Linux from 3 to 10, CentOS, SLES and Debian. Licensing via RHSM and virt-who, in-place upgrades RHEL 7 to 8, conversion from CentOS to RHEL.
Do you do security patching regularly?
Yes, as ongoing operations with Ansible, for RHEL, CentOS, SLES and Debian, with maintenance windows and a rollback plan.
Do you also handle load balancers and proxies?
Yes. HAProxy and Keepalived, reverse proxies with nginx and Apache, Squid, DNS and LDAP as well as application servers such as Tomcat, JBoss and WebLogic.
