Dipl.-Ing. Gregor J. Theis, Managing Director and Shareholder of IB Theis GmbH

IB Theis GmbH grew out of Ingenieurbüro Theis, which Gregor Theis founded in 1992 at the end of his electrical engineering studies at RWTH Aachen. Office first in Düsseldorf, in Meerbusch since 2005; in 2025 the engineering office was brought into IB Theis GmbH. The focus has shifted over three decades: from network planning via software development to database and systems administration, today up to Kubernetes and DevOps platforms. What has stayed is the way of working: build systems, run them, own them.

Profile

Dipl.-Ing. Gregor J. Theis is founder and managing partner of IB Theis GmbH. He studied electrical engineering with a focus on computer engineering at RWTH Aachen, graduating in 1993 with a thesis on a distributed real-time operating system. He sold his first program in 1983 and has worked in IT since 1987. He took on his first Unix system administration in 1990 at RWTH Aachen on SunOS 4.1, and he followed Linus Torvalds’ first post about a new operating system and the ensuing debate with Andrew S. Tanenbaum on comp.os.minix as they happened.

In telecommunications since 1995, for banks since 2001: as Oracle DBA, Unix administrator, group and sub-project lead and today as DevOps engineer for Kubernetes, Kafka and database platforms. Since 2000 he has earned 25 certifications, most recently renewed in 2024 (AWS Solutions Architect) and 2022 (LPIC-2).

How we work

  1. Think operations and development together

    We have done both: run data centers and written software, up to leading an infrastructure software project of around 20 person-years. That is why we build systems to be operable.

  2. Automate whatever repeats

    Since 2001 scripts for monitoring and software distribution have been part of every assignment, today Ansible, AWX and GitOps under version control.

  3. Keep running without us

    We document what we build and train the people who run it. A project is done when your team can run it without us.
