Two data warehouses on Oracle 19c

Banner reference project apoBank: two data warehouses on Oracle 19c with Exasol

apoBank runs two data warehouse systems for bank risk management and regulatory reporting, one of them following Data Vault 2.0. Both ran on Oracle 12.2 and 18c and had to be upgraded to 19c; in parallel Exasol was introduced as the analytical database. The assignment was on behalf of DXC Technology, which runs the systems for the bank.

What we implemented

From November 2019 to June 2021 we built, cloned and upgraded the Oracle databases to 19c (19.10), introduced Oracle APEX and ORDS and installed Tomcat application servers. We installed, administered and supported Exasol 6.2 for development. For the DWH team we developed and debugged SQL and PL/SQL, supported the job control with UC4/Automic and built a small web UI for job automation.

We automated the installations of the business applications and the database software with Ansible and versioned them in Git, so that they are reproducible on RHEL 7. Recurring tasks have run in PL/SQL, shell, Perl, AWK and Python ever since instead of by hand.

Result

Both data warehouses run on Oracle 19c, Exasol is in use, and the environments can be rebuilt by playbook. The knowledge lives in Git and in the documentation, not in individual heads.
